Artist Statement
My work expresses my faith, passions, and life experiences. My Zimbabwean heritage is infused into my work incorporating native wildlife and imagined and actual landscapes. The focus is nature and time. There is something visually powerful about our environment. Although my paintings often contain hidden elements, the work always alludes to deeper meaning.
I draw my inspiration from artists like Bev Doolittle, Monet, and Oleg Shuplyak with the use of dreamlike interpretations of reality. Like the Impressionist Monet, time’s influence on light is also an important factor in my work. I depict life cycles showing the season, time of day, weather, and quality of light as the timeless characteristics of life. I unify a variety of images into one harmonious composition with color and texture. After creating an acrylic under painting, I layer oil intensifying the luminosity. The final combination of imagery, hidden objects, light, hue, and texture evoke emotions connected to eternity and faith.
